We are a KYO-KAI (a training "club" taking instruction and affiliation from an organization and teachers that are located elsewhere) operating under the authority of Sugawara Tetsutaka and the Sugawara Martial Arts Institute of Machida-shi, Tokyo, Japan. Our teachers (under Sugawara-sensei) are: Mark Jones, Napa, California; Pat Nichols, Madison, Wisconsin; and Paul Frank, Kansas City, Missouri.

Sugawara-sensei is a top-ranking aikido teacher and was a long-term student of Morihei Uyeshiba. He took the rank of kyoshi in classical swordsmanship under Otake Risuke.

Our emphasis is upon classical, traditional, omote level techniques of bujutsu as taught by Sugawara-sensei. We train in iaijutsu ("fast-draw" swordsmanship), kenjutsu (swordsmanship with the longsword), kodachi-jutsu ("shortsword" swordsmanship), ryoto-jutsu ("both" swordsmanship), bojutsu (six-foot staff technique), naginata-jutsu (techniques using the Japanese glaive), and so-jutsu (spearmanship).
