Is Bruce Lee irrelevant to JKD today?

I have heard people make the comment that Bruce Lee has nothing to do with JKD any more.

A few questions come to mind...

1.) How can you say you train Jeet Kune Do without some tie back to its founder?

2.) Are the techniques and training methods of JKD outdated?

3.) If Bruce Lee has nothing to do with JKD any more, should it still be called Jeet Kune Do?

Given the direction of his process of discovery in the hands of individuals such as Ted Wong, Terri Tom (has a new JFJKD book coming out by the way!) and Victor Colon of originaljkd.net, I'd say that Bruce Lee is relevant once more!

So long as those traditional arts that masquerade under the guise of self-defense continue to dominate on the scale they still do, Bruce Lee will be relevant.

I don't see how anyone can call what they do Jeet Kune Do if they deny the founder and don't follow the basic principles he laid out for the art. Just doesn't make much sense to me.  Huh

Daniel, I think what you said in the grappling thread sums it up best...

Quote
But honor both your hard work and that of JKD's founder, by ever striving to distinguish between the two in your communication of it to others - thereby honoring their individuality as well...

I'll say it one more time... Well said!  Smiley
