[Martial Direct] How would you make the sport better?

[Pedro Carvalho] First of all, my number one rule would be the word "respect". All you see in the NHB events is attitude… starting from the crowd. The promoters are even worse. All I see now is a bunch of guys trying to prove that Jiu-Jitsu can be beaten. And I'll go even further, training our art to try to do so, instead of accepting the fact that Jiu-Jitsu is the most complete art, as we all know.

In martial arts, I see a large amount of people trying whatever they can, even if they have to cheat. As an example, Royce's last fight.

[MD] You mention Royce's fight with Yoshida. How do you think Royce was doing?
[PC] He got robbed big time.

[MD] You have a very successful 3-part series of video tapes out. I've read many great reviews on them. Why did you decide to make them?

[PC] I wanted people to see the real Jiu-Jitsu without holding anything back. I wanted to share with people all over the world what I do in my school on a daily basis.

[MD] Do you have any plans on making any more instructional videos?

[PC] I will have a DVD series pretty soon.

[MD] You also have a couple of books out. Are they only available through your website?

[PC] Yes, only available through my website.

[MD] Do the books cover the same techniques that are in your videos? Are they meant to be a companion to them?

[PC] The books are only an introduction. On the videos, you will see more advanced techniques.

[MD] What is your favorite technique?

[PC] My favorite technique is the one where I can trap my opponent and choose how I want to finish them.

[MD] Who do you most admire in the Jiu-Jitsu world?

[PC] I admire anyone that has no attitude and their abilities can speak for themselves. Such as Rickson, De La Riva, Royce...

[MD] What do you consider to be your greatest strength as a teacher?

[PC] I consider my greatest strength as a teacher is to care and protect the weak, because I believe that God does not put people in a better position than others. I believe that he blesses people because he wants us, through kindness and love, in special for the wounded and broken hearted ones, to show who he really is.

[MD] What do you most want to be remembered for?

[PC] I want to be remembered as a person who made a difference in others' lives and not just any martial arts instructor or someone that had a skill and felt better than others.

[MD] Thank you very much for talking with us.

[PC] Thank you very much.
